Hi- My name is Mark DeVries, I was born in Grand Rapids,MI.on October 26,1954. My father-now deceased was, Charles Arthur DeVries, born on May 18,1930 ,to Jenny Peterson, at her aunt's house in Grand Rapids,MI. Jenny Peterson was the maid for Charles W. Garfield. At the time she became pregnant with Charles. She was not married at the time, but it is believed that her son was fathered by Charles Garfield. Because Charles Garfield was 82 at the time of my dad's birth, it may seem unbelievable. But does Charles Garfield have a son? We would love to find out! Jenny continued to work for Charles Garfield and little Charles was loved by Charles Garfield. Jenny married William DeVries when Charles was 4 years old. Charles DeVries did not know that William DeVries was not his paternal father until 1972 when he needed his birth certificate to get a passport for an upcoming trip to Europe. On the birth certificate his name was Charles William Peterson. Although we knew that my father's real name might have been Garfield, we never researched it until today. We came across this site after reading the book by Mary Emily Schroeder that my mom has had for years. It has always been a rumor but after reading the book about Charles Garfield, I see so much of the same kind of man in my dad and in myself. Please contact me with any information or rumors that might have been going through the Garfield Family news in the past 80 years! 661.979.3907 or by e-mail. Looking forward to hear from you, Mark Charles DeVries

I've enjoyed digging into the information you've presented - my great grandmother was Martha Jane Garfield Downer - 1860-1926. As I often do, I've put less credence in your data because of the lack of care taken in the Welcome statement. In the second sentence, you used the word "too" in place of the word "to." In the second paragraph, you used the word "of" when the word "for" would have been appropriate. At the bottom, you've misspelled "authenticity." Forgive me for being nitpicking, but as a former editor of sales proposals, I'm a firm believer that trust in a document is proportional to its accuracy.

April showers bring May flowers
I was told that years ago by people way smarter then I am so I have to believe them. Where did January, February and March go, first they were here then they were gone.
Not a whole lot new going on here in High Springs, maybe that is a good thing.
Nancy and I will be leaving here on Monday, May 1, 2011 heading for the Clymer, New York area with our Travel Trailer, once there we have got to completely unload it and take it to the dealer in North East, PA where we purchased it in the fall of 2009. There a factory driver will take it back to the factory in Middleburg, IN for some factory repairs. After the repairs are completed we will go to Indiana and pick it up. That could tie up a lot of May.
I have been VERY lax in the Garfield Family genealogy for the past couple of years, I have been volunteering many hours per week (up 20 - 30 hr) to the Korean War Veterans Association of which I am a member. I inform them at our last staff meeting that this would be my last year as their Quartermaster, I have done it for 4 - 5 years, time for somebody else to take over and I hope to spend at least one full day a week on the family project.
We need input from you the readers, along with stories and pictures. I hope to get the last half of generation 8 completed and then the remainder of the generations, 9 - 14. I have lots of info to add and corrections to made, it is a very time consummating job.
Thanks for reading, have a great spring and see you again soon, Dick Garfield
