It does look for sure that we will be able to have a workshop at the Garfield Home (Lawnfield) the first two weeks in August (Aug 1 - Aug 14). Our main objective will be to make a wall mounting family tree of President Garfield's family line from his father and grandfather in England, through Edward the first Garfield to settle in the new world, to his present decendents. We will be looking for any person who would like to volunteer for a few hours, a day or whenever you can be available. Please let me know if you will be able to help. Thanks, Dick

I was so grateful for your help in my search for Damaris Garfield... a seemingly hopeless task. And although what is in the generation pages is not "hallelujah, I found her detail" it has given me hope that may be I will be able to find further enlightenment.
And I do look forward to each issue of the newsletter... I know what a chore they are to keep current and with news. Thank you for your effort in editing and publishing it.. Marjorie
Thanks Marjorie
Hi, my family history search ends with a Joseph B. Garfield, born in 1805. He married a Sara A.(unknown last name). They had 6 children. It had been passed down that Joseph was related to Pres Garfield, but I can't seem to find any link, or any info on Joseph B. Garfield's parents. Please let me know if you have heard of him, or if you would like more info from me.
Kris Murphy
Thanks for getting back to me. I've been going around in circles, but I'm not sure if Hannah & James are his parents, because the family info I have has his birthdate Sept 29, 1805 and died in 1894. I know that he lived in Vt for some time (according to a census I came across) I'm filing for birth/death/marriage certificate in Vermont. What are some of the better websites to search for info??
I do know that from the extensive research my aunt did over the years (without computer) that Joseph Garfield married Sarah A. She was born in 1815 and died in 1891. Her maiden name is unkown. They had 6 children:
William 7/6/1835 -10/7/1836,
Cornelia Garfield (my great great grandmother--married Watlter Davis) b. 9/3/1839. (she had 5 children.)
Susan Frances b. 8/1/1842,
George Henry b. 1/1/1845,
Eldoreller Garfield born and died 2/9/1849,
Marcia Eveline Garfield b. 6/7/1852 (I've found references to her in my research as "Eva (Garfield) Slocum"
My aunt has a photo of Joseph Garfield, which she copied for me. Hope this has been helpful
Kris, if you want I'Il post the picture and we'll see if anybody can reconsize it.
Hi Dick,
About the unidentified Garfields. The following dates are for my brother and sister. (I think you
already have Margaret's dod.)
MARGARET SCOTT GARFIELD (Mrs. Robert A. Cunningham) birth Portsmouth, N.H. Sept 16, 1922
death Lincoln, Ma May 20, 2002.
WILLIAM ERNEST GARFIELD birth Portsmouth, N.H. July 13, 1924 death Portsmouth, N.H. Jan. 1, 2005.
I have done some wondering about Elijah Garfield's heritage. I was always told that we were related to President Garfield (Are there any Garfields who have not been told this?) And as you well know the relationship cannot be documented. My branch of Garfields were not writers. What little information I could find brought many variations of the name spelling. (Gaffield, Garfielde, etc.) I always thought this was because we could not or would not spell properly. Now I wonder if the spelling of the family name had many variations in England and all of the spellings were used at one time.
Most of the American Garfields are descendants of Edward Garfield. Did Edward have brothers or uncles who came to America at a different time? Perhaps my Garfields came to America and used Gaffield as their name. I have been told that they settled in Vermont, New Hampshire, or upstate New York. I will follow up on this wonder.
Nancy Garfield Risdon
Thanks Nancy, for the updates. Yes, there was many spellings of the Garfield name. Edward Garfield, was Gearfield, on my website I have a copy of both he and his wife's signature.
If anybody has any information about the above lost people please let us know.
GARFIELD FARM AND INN MUSEUM
Hello from a muddy Garfield Farm. Temperatures are above normal so everything here is a sea of mud. That is a bit early for this time of year as normally it is freezing or below. We still have opportunity for snow but it is less likely that it would stay on the ground for more than a week.
Of course with this premature warm weather, everyone is thinking outdoors and spring gardening so our Prairie Seminar is coming up just in time to break that cabin fever. I thought you might like to see how we send the publicity out to the papers and media I have added it to the end of this message.
I should also send a heads up for the March 6th Antique Apple Tree Grafting Seminar as we are already getting a good response. One of the community colleges encourages its students to attend for extra credit.
January which used to be a long cold month to endure has become the time to get things done. We spent most of January organizing our files and paperwork which had been in need of attention. I still have that pesky last pile of paper to deal with. I would come to terms with it but we had a computer
go down and so we bit the bullet and upgraded to XP from NT. Of course that means reinstalling programs, peripheral equipment etc. that takes hours and days to get right. It seems that 6 years is all it takes to become obsolete no thanks to all the hackers and virus generators.
We have tackled duplicating all our historic records so we will be up to speed as restoration progresses.
So we should have a good turn out for the prairie seminar and as these computers get straightened out I hope to have the calendar of events and classes posted and mailed to all the museum members. I have a newsletter in the works that will photo highlight last year's activities. So I hope everyone is enjoying these waning days of winter.

19th Annual Native Plant Management Seminar February 19, 2005
Featuring Chicago's Millennium Park Plant Supplier
On Saturday February 19, from 8:30 am 4:00 pm Garfield Farm Museum will hold its 19th annual Prairie, Woodlands, and Wetlands Management Seminar for property owners and natural area enthusiasts. This in depth seminar features all the steps necessary to begin and maintain an existing
natural area or to plant Illinois flora in ones garden borders.
Roy Diblik of Northwind Perennial Farm, Springfield, WI, Conner Shaw of Possibilities Place Nursery in Monee, IL and Jerome Johnson of Garfield Farm Museum will cover the basics in working with native flowers and trees for back yard gardeners to owners of farms or woods.
The seminar will begin with a look at the library and map research that can highlight re-settlement conditions on a particular property. With Garfield Farm's perspective of how land use evolved over time, a discussion on settlement, farming practices and urban development will identify
opportunities for restoring or establishing native plants. Diblik's love for his work is reflected in his talk and concern for a sustainable environment. He is a pioneer in propagating native plants for wholesale and retail operations first at Natural Gardens of St.Charles and later at his Northwind Perennial Farm in Wisconsin.
Conner Shaw founded Possibility Place Nursery near Monee, IL. All the native trees Shaw sells are grown by from seed collected from the wild, producing specimens that are well prepared for transplanting. His method produces a high number of roots that gives each tree a better chance
for survival. Shaw's knowledge of what conditions will cause native trees and shrubs to thrive makes this presentation useful to all property owners.
Johnson will complete the session with a discussion of management methods to encourage and increase native plantings in woods, open or wet areas. Ways to control invasive species of plants that left alone will overtake any type of local ecosystem will be discussed. Controlled burns,
herbicide use, weeding or cutting need to be integrated into any plan for the maximum
impact.
There is a $45 fee for the seminar and lunch to be held at Garfield Farm Museum, five miles west of Geneva, IL off ILL Rt. 38 on Garfield Road. Reservations can be made by calling (630) 584-8485 or email info@garfieldfarm.org. Garfield Farm Museum is a 370 acre historically intact former 1840s
prairie farmstead and teamster inn being restored by donors and volunteers from 37 states as an 1840s working farm museum.

GARFIELD HOME (LAWNFIELD)
Dick,
Great to see the newsletter again!! Best regards to you and the rest of the Garfield clan for the New Year! You asked about the connection between Henri I (1006-1060), King of France, and the Garfield family. Here's an ahnentafel chart showing the ancestry from President Garfield to Henri I. An ahnentafel chart, BTW, condenses a lot of data. The number preceding a name is the ahnentafel number for that individual.
The individual's father is 2 times that number, and the individual's mother is 2 times the number, plus 1. So in the listing below,President Garfield is #1, his mother, Eliza Ballou, is #3, her mother, Mehitable Ingalls, is #7, etc.
Not sure how this will show up on the board, as far as alignment and spacing. If it's really bad, I'll repost or find another way.
If anybody has any questions, please let me know.
Phil Currie
